First there was an acoustic guitar.
Then came the drums and piano. Then the organ and harmonica. How did all
of this sound come from one person without being pre-programmed?
The answer lies in a very useful device called a loop pedal. It
records music while you are playing it live, and "loops"
it (or plays what you've just recorded) over and over again. The
loops are usually about 10 seconds long, and often start with a
rhythmic instrument such as the drums or guitar. Then other
instruments can be added, creating a full band sound.
It is very effective for the solo artist, who often doesn't get the
chance to play much lead guitar. It can get a bit complicated, even
for the musician, but it makes the performances fun to watch,
especially if things don't happen to go as planned.
